You can't get there from here...

Whenever I admit to another soul here in No-where Oklahoma that I'm writing a book I usually get the look. The one that says what a silly unrealistic goal that is. I don't know where this attitude comes from, but it seems to run wild in small town America. Maybe its because things like becoming a published author only seem to happen to people in larger cities. So from time to time I can't help but feel like the idealistic dreamer that everyone else is shaking their heads at. But regardless, I will keep on keeping on. And who knows maybe someday I'll prove them wrong. And if not, well at least I tried.

Wish me luck...

  1. Hi, I do wish you luck. I wrote my first novel this summer. I aimed for a thousand words a night after work and usually got more than that, but always got the thousand. The time was just right, as before I just couldn't do it at all. I finished 100,000 words in ten weeks and now an agent is considering it. He may say no of course, but its out there. Finishing was the first great thing. If you want to take a look at my supernatural short fiction, that's what my blog is all about.

  2. I spent a lot of time as a child/teenager in a rural area of Alberta, Canada, and I can totally empathize with what you are experiencing with "small town opinion". I love small towns, I love the people, everything about them, but many (not all, but many) do have this thing about going out and making someting of yourself. Any ambition towards the arts of any kind is considered a "pipe dream", and like my grandmother used to say, "no worries, dreams are free". It was like telling me that wanting to go and do what I wanted to do was in fact, just a dream, but aren't you cute type of thing. Go ahead with your writing, and know full well how talented you are, and prove people who feel you won't reach your goal wrong. And enjoy every minute of reaching out and obtaining your goal!

  4. Hi Annette
Whatever you do, never give up. Writing a book isn't easy. I know, I wrote a comic fantasy novel a few years ago but then was unable to find a publisher, so, discouraged, I've written nothing since...until, that is, I decided to start a blog last month. No fiction as yet, just essays on whatever I find interesting, mainly to do with Hong Kong, where I now live. I don't know if you'd find it interesting, but do take a look at my essay "Chinese Whispers":

Meanwhile, I shall follow your progress with interest.

  6. Hello Annette,
Oh, DO keep writing!!! Keep pursuing your dreams. Those of us called to write MUST write, so keep on keeping on. Say no to the naysayers. All good things come in time. I wish you the best.
You may want to check out HubPages....that's where I write, and have found considerable encouragement there. Here's the site (and my profile) address: http://hubpages.com/_quhng16s2trb/profile/DoodleLyn

  8. Good luck for sure!

But one thing I think that's important to keep in mind is that no matter where you live it's your talent and craft that will get you where you want to go...

    And the naysayers...

No one has ever impeded my progress of doing something who was himself not also interested in it... they're just jealous!

    Jon

    p.s.
Hope you don't mind if I follow along with this blog

I never thought I would care about having people follow my blog, but its nice knowing I'm talking to people and not just the ether. And a big plus is I've found some great blogs to follow as well. Thanks again.
